Elliot Stewart to Coach Baseball at Mission College Prep

San Luis Obispo, CA June 8, 2017 – Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School (Mission College Prep) announced today that Elliot Stewart will be the new head baseball coach beginning June 12, 2017.

Stewart, an alumni of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, was a 3 year starter for the Mustangs. He redshirted in 2012 to recover from Tommy John surgery. After a full year recovery, he came back in 2013 to start 40 games and helped Cal Poly get to their second Regional in Division 1 history. Stewart caught all three games in the UCLA regional. During his playing career Cal Poly ranked top 25 in the country 3 out of 4 years.

Prior to Stewart playing for Cal Poly, he played for West Valley College in 2009. During his time there he earned first-team All-Golden Gate Conference Honors as a catcher. He helped lead West Valley to a 22-18 overall record, a tie for first place in the Golden Gate Conference and a bid to the state regionals.

Following his playing career, Stewart began his coaching career immediately at Cal Poly. He was hired as the Director of Operations in 2014, and Volunteer Assistant for the 2015 and 2017 seasons under Head Coach Larry Lee. “Mission is getting a very good baseball coach in Elliot Stewart.” said Lee. “He has a good baseball mind and works well with players. I enjoyed working with him as a player and as an assistant coach. I look forward to see what he will accomplish in the future.” In 2016, Stewart took a year away from Cal Poly to start a baseball training business in SLO where he worked with hundreds of youth baseball players along the coast.

“Elliot brings an absolutely extraordinary set of leadership and motivational skills to our program. He has enjoyed tremendous success as a both a player and a coach at the Division I collegiate level. He is assuming the reins of a program that is on the rise and he will continue to model and reinforce our institutional values of faith, sportsmanship, teamwork, and general excellence.” said Mike Susank, Principal of Mission College Prep. “Elliot himself is a proud product of a Catholic high school education and I am just thrilled for our students and our families over the incredible opportunity they will have to work with Coach Stewart.”

“My number one goal is for MCP baseball is to get back to playing high level, championship caliber baseball. Our success at MCP will hopefully set a new standard for high school baseball on the Central Coast” said Elliot Stewart. “I’m a firm believer that when the team wins, everyone wins.”

Stewart takes pride in making players improve daily at practice. Stewart goes on to say, “With baseball being such a mental game, it’s rewarding to know the tools I give them to get better on the field also makes them a better person off of the field. If I can encourage players to work harder than they ever have and give them ways to deal with adversity, they’ll be set up for the real world when baseball is over.”

Stewart’s intends on giving his players all the information necessary to be their own best coach. The community is going to see a refreshed and elite level of play with more attention to detail in the upcoming season.

Stewart’s roots stem from playing varsity baseball and football for Archbishop Mitty High School out of San Jose, CA.
