Arroyo Grande tops Mission Prep in three volleyball games

Sep 15, 2010

For four years running, Arroyo Grande High has been the gold standard in girls volleyball along the Central Coast.

But the Eagles have some work to do if they want to make it five years, coach Ernie Santa Cruz said Tuesday night, following a 25-23, 27-25, 25-16 win at Mission Prep.

“We didn’t play with any focus,” Santa Cruz said. “Our approach to the game wasn’t very good, and we’re going to work on that.
“For the team and for myself, we all work way too hard to play like this,” he said. “Hopefully we can play at a higher level.”

First it was Dylan Morrow. A year later it was Kevin Laird.

The question of how Brady Lock will replace an explosive and multifaceted player seems to pop up every year for the Mission Prep football coach.

“Yeah, we’ve lost a couple of good ones,” Lock said of the pair of Division I athletes. Laird is now playing football at Cornell, while Morrow plays baseball at San Jose State. “Let’s hope we get another one. But we’re not counting on that.”

Mission Prep’s Knengi Martin is a coach, period

Aug 29, 2010

Nine years of professional playing experience. A key member of the dominant U.S. national team that easily won the world championship in July. Experience as a youth football coach. Clearly, Martin seemed the perfect candidate to be Mission Prep’s next junior varsity coach. Yet the hiring turned a few heads for one simple reason: Martin is a woman.

“I’ve always loved football, and that’s the reason I want to continue coaching,” Martin, 26, said. “I want to spread that love. Great coaches inspired me to keep playing and get better. I want to do that for others.”
