Homecoming Celebration 2010

November 18, 2010

Mission Prep’s 2010 Homecoming Court showed proudly in front of bleachers full of students, family, alumni and excited fans at halftime of the Friday, November 5th football game versus Christian of El Cajon.  Each prince and princess couple rode across the field in Disneyland-themed golf carts decorated by students from each Mission class level: a wagon from Freshman Frontierland; a spacecraft from Sophomore Tomorrowland, a jungle pontoon from Junior Adventureland, and a castle from Senior Fantasyland.  The royal couples then stepped before the crowd as they met their parents who escorted them up to platforms set up before the Disneyland Castle (thanks Teresa Marsano and all of our student painters).

Emcees Gevrey Talbert and Ian Smith-Grove announced our 2010 Royalty:

Freshmen                 Tyler Bleuher and Trevor Fernandez

Sophomores            Katherine Taylor and Matt Soucheck

Juniors                      Eric Alexiev and Riquel Santos

Seniors                     Andrea Fernandez and David Tompkins

                                    Deirdre Laird and Tony Andreini

                                   Annie Mooney and Zach Silacci

                                   Marissa Hay and Arthur Lane

                                   Megan Montoya and Will Buckingham

With our full court assembled before their parents, families, friends, and the MCP community, our cheer mascot, the lion, delivered to our emcees an envelope holding the names of our 2010 king and queen.  Balloons broke free from behind the castle toward the sky and smiling faces whistled and whoo-hooed as King Tony Andreini and Queen Deirdre Laird were announced to the congratulatory applause of a delighted crowd.  Having earned the most votes from the Mission student body just hours before, this chosen couple received their crowns joyfully, surrounded by friends on the royalty platforms, their parents at their sides, and our community in the stands.

Although Mission football was unable to match a strong performance by Christian of El Cajon, not even disappointed football players could dwell on their loss for too long, as the following night, November 6th brought the excitement of our Homecoming dance.  A host of students, staff and parents planned, prepared and delivered a semi-formal event attended by 190 Mission students—about 70% of our student body—as well as 30 student guests!  Alum Alec Sukoski (’08) of Sukoski Brothers Photography provided photography for students and their guests.  King Tony Andreini and Queen Deirdre Laird even shared a dance together encircled by a crowd that packed the Performing Arts Center as the night drew near its close.

Student cleaning crews who gathered up the fallen hallway decorations and balloons from the dance on the following days cleared away the remains of a week of spirited rallies, class competitions, and well-orchestrated ceremonies spearheaded by ASB President Leesa Minkel, Vice-President Annie Mooney, Secretary Deirdre Laird, Treasurer Kelsey Mather, and Spirit Coordinator Tucker Marsano and supported by countless student officers, volunteers, faculty and staff members, parents, and community members.  Well-deserved and genuine thanks to all participants in Mission’s 2010 Homecoming celebration and spirit week!  Your positive efforts made it happen!  Blessings!
