ROYAL PRIDE WEEKLY
September 8, 2023
Good Afternoon Royals Family!
It was great to see everyone at Back-to-School Night on Wednesday! We continue to thoroughly enjoy the energy and enthusiasm that each of your daughters and sons brings to our campus.
As I alluded to last week in my message, we are now entering what are traditionally among the more challenging couple of weeks for our students, and specifically with regards to their time-management. Every class is now operating at full capacity for homework (tests and term-papers are either ‘here’ or ‘coming very soon’) and every sports team/activity is hosting daily/weekly events (with occasional ‘late nights’ for travel). At the same time, all of the ‘new friends’ they’ve met at school means that social circles are expanding for our students, and along with that comes new events on weekends (and new social media connections) to compete with ever-shrinking amounts of time. All of the above is a blessed part of adolescence and learning to manage this all is a critical skill that takes months (and years) to develop. But be ready, the next month of school will often challenge students to rebalance their life (and that can be some of the hardest-learned lessons of high school).
To aid in this growth, several years ago we implemented a fantastic program for freshmen called ‘Frosh Focus’ which teaches a year-long series of time-management and high school success-skills. This program is delivered to every freshman in their Health/World Geography class. However, it is often the case that sophomores and juniors also continue to feel the challenge of trying to ‘do it all.’ To meet this need we are building a curriculum to address their unique challenges and we hope to deploy it soon through our Student Choice events.
However, some simple strategies are easily adopted right now for any student who is feeling the weight of high school life: take advantage of Office Hours (after school, everyday) and put the phone away after 8pm. Trust me, as the parent of both a junior and a recent graduate, I know the monumental challenge of implementing that ‘simple’ family advice, but it remains the case that the student who can make the commitment to those two things has found an almost unbeatable strategy for staying in balance.
I hope you all continue to feel, as I do, that the start of the year at MCP has been almost surreal in its success. We are moving forward into a new reality and that will continue to present opportunities for us to grow as an institution. But in many ways, it feels comfortably ‘normal’ to be back on campus. Enjoy your weekend and thank you for your continued partnership.
Yours in Christ,
Mike Susank
Principal
